ശേഷം ശന്തനു മഹാരാജാവ് മരിച്ചു.

ചിത്രാംഗതനെ രാജാവായി അഭിഷേകം ചെയ്തു. ചിത്രാംഗതൻ പരാക്രമശാലിയും രാജാവാകാൻ യോഗ്യനും ആയിരുന്നു.

പിന്നീട് ഒരിക്കൽ ഒരു ഗന്ധർവ്വനുമായുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഗന്ധർവ്വന്റെ മായയിൽ പെട്ട ചിത്രാംഗതൻ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്.

ആ സമയത്ത് അനുജനായ വിചിത്രവീര്യനു പ്രായപൂർത്തി ആയിരുന്നില്ല. എന്നിരുന്നാലും രാജ്യം അനാഥമാവാതിരിക്കാൻ വിചിത്രവീര്യനെ രാജാവാക്കുകയും ഭീഷ്മർ ഭരണകാര്യങ്ങൾ നിർവഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

അങ്ങനെ കാലം കടന്നുപോയി...

വിചിത്രവീര്യനു വിവാഹപ്രായം ആയി. ആ സമയത്താണ് കാശിരാജാവിന്റെ പുത്രിമാരുടെ സ്വയംവരം നടക്കുന്ന വിവരം അവർ അറിഞ്ഞത്.

അംബ, അംബിക, അംബാലിക എന്നിവ ആയിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പേരുകൾ.

സത്യവതിയുടെ നിർദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം വിചിത്രവീര്യനു വേണ്ടി കാശിരാജ്യത്ത് പോയി കന്യകമാരെ സ്വയംവരത്തിൽ ജയിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ ഭീഷ്മർ തയ്യാറായി.

അങ്ങിനെ സ്വയംവരം നടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു ഭീഷ്മരും എത്തി. 

ഇതു കണ്ടു അവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാർ പലതും പറഞ്ഞു ഭീഷ്മരെ കളിയാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

ഇതു കേട്ട് ക്ഷുഭിതനായ ഭീഷ്മർ കന്യകമാരെ കൈക്കലാക്കി തന്റെ രഥത്തിൽ കയറ്റി. ശേഷം അവിടെ കൂടി നിന്ന രാജാക്കന്മാരെ യുദ്ധത്തിന് വെല്ലുവിളിച്ചു.

ഇതു കണ്ട് കോപാകുലന്മാരായ രാജാക്കന്മാർ ഒരുമിച്ച് ഭീഷ്മരെ ആക്രമിച്ചു എങ്കിലും ഭീഷ്മരുടെ യുദ്ധസമർഥ്യം കണ്ട് പിന്മാറി. അവർ ഭീഷ്മരെ സ്തുതിച്ചു.

പക്ഷെ ഒരാൾ മാത്രം ഭീഷ്മരുടെ രഥത്തെ പിന്തുടർന്നു. 

ശ്വാല്യ (സാൽവ) രാജാവായിരുന്നു അത്. 

സത്യത്തിൽ കാശിരാജാവിന്റെ മൂത്ത പുത്രിയായ അംബയും ശ്വാല്യ രാജാവും തമ്മിൽ തമ്മിൽ മനസാ വരിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. സ്വയം വരത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ ജയിക്കുമെന്ന് അംബ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ഭീഷ്മർ ഈ സത്യം അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. കന്യകമാരുമായി പോകുന്ന ഭീഷ്മരെ 

ശ്വാല്യൻ വെല്ലു വിളിച്ചു.

ശ്വാല്യരാജൻ ആദ്യം നന്നായി പൊരുതി എങ്കിലും ഭീഷ്മരോട് പിടിച്ച് നിൽക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനായില്ല. 

അങ്ങിനെ കന്യകമാരെയും കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ഹസ്തിനപുരിയിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തി.

പക്ഷെ അപ്പോഴാണ് അംബ താനും ശ്വാല്യരാജാവും തമ്മിലുള്ള ഇഷ്ടത്തെപ്പറ്റി പറയുന്നത്.

അപ്പോൾ അംബയെ ശ്വാല്യരാജാവിന്റെ അടുക്കലേക്ക് അയക്കാൻ ഭീഷ്മർ ഏർപ്പാട് ചെയ്യുകയും അംബ ഏറെ ആഹ്ലാദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

എന്നാൽ ഭീഷ്മനാൽ തോല്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ശ്വാല്യരാജാവ് അംബയെ സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ തയ്യാറായില്ല.

ഈ വിവരം തിരിച്ചെത്തി അംബ ഭീഷ്മരോട് പറഞ്ഞു. 

ഭീഷ്മർ ആശയക്കുഴപ്പത്തിലായി. വിചിത്രവീര്യനെക്കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ അംബയേയും വിവാഹം കഴിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും വേറെ ആളെ മനസിൽ കൊണ്ടുനടക്കുന്ന കന്യക ആയതിനാൽ വിചിത്രവീര്യൻ അതിനു സമ്മതിച്ചില്ല. 

വിചിത്രവീര്യൻ അംബികയെയും അംബാലികയെയും വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. 

അപ്പോൾ ഭീഷ്മർ തന്നെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ച് ഈ അവസ്ഥയിൽ നിന്നും തന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് അംബ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ബ്രഹ്മചാരി ആയ ഭീഷ്മർ അതിന് സമ്മതിച്ചില്ല. 

ശ്വാല്യരാജാവിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് തിരിച്ച് പോകാൻ പറഞ്ഞു ഭീഷ്മർ അംബയെ കയ്യൊഴിഞ്ഞു.

ഇതുകണ്ട് കോപാകുലയായ അംബയുടെ മനസിൽ പ്രതികാര ചിന്ത നിറഞ്ഞു. എത്ര ജന്മമെടുത്തിട്ടാണെങ്കിലും ഭീഷ്മരുടെ മരണം താൻ വഴി ആയിരിക്കും എന്ന് അവർ ഭീഷ്മരോട് പറഞ്ഞു. 

കാലം പിന്നെയും കടന്നു പോയി...

വർഷങ്ങൾ പലത് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും വിചിത്രവീര്യനു കുട്ടികൾ ഒന്നും ഉണ്ടായില്ല. വിചിത്രവീര്യൻ ആണെങ്കിൽ രോഗം വന്നു മരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തു.

ഇതു കണ്ടു എല്ലാവരും ദുഃഖിതരായി. രാജ്യവും വംശവും ഒക്കെ അനാഥമായതായി ഭീഷ്മർക്ക് തോന്നി. ഇതിനുള്ള പ്രതിവിധിയെപ്പറ്റി ഭീഷ്മരും സത്യവതിയും കൂടിയാലോചിച്ചു. 

വംശം അറ്റ്‌ പോകാതിരിക്കാൻ രാജകുമാരിമാരിൽ നീ തന്നെ സന്താനോൽപ്പാദനം നടത്തണമെന്ന് സത്യവതി ഭീഷ്മരോട് പറഞ്ഞു. 

പക്ഷെ ഭീഷ്മർ അതിന് തയ്യാറായിരുന്നില്ല.

താൻ കാരണമാണ് ഇതൊക്കെ സംഭവിച്ചത് എന്ന ചിന്ത സത്യവതിയെ തളർത്തി.

അവസാനം ഭീഷ്മർ തന്നെ ഒരു ഉപായം മുൻപോട്ട് വെച്ചു.

മഹർഷിമാരുടെ നിയോഗം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് സന്താനോൽപ്പാദനം നടത്തുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു അത്. പണ്ട് ക്ഷത്രിയരെ മുഴുവൻ പരശുരാമൻ കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയപ്പോൾ വംശം നില നിർത്തുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി ശ്രേഷ്ഠരായ മഹർഷിമാരെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് അന്ന് സന്താനങ്ങളെ ജനിപ്പിച്ചത്. ആ രീതി ആണ് ഭീഷ്മരും അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്.

വേറെ വഴി ഒന്നും ഇല്ലെന്നു മനസിലാക്കിയ സത്യവതി അതിന് സമ്മതിച്ചു.

അപ്പോഴാണ് സത്യവതി തന്റെ പുത്രൻ ആയ കൃഷ്ണദ്വൈപായന/വേദവ്യാസ നെപ്പറ്റി ഓർക്കുന്നത്. ലജ്ജയോടെയാണെങ്കിലും പണ്ട് നടന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ സത്യവതി ഭീഷ്മരോട് പറഞ്ഞു.

ഇതിനായി വേദവ്യാസനെ താൻ വരുത്താമെന്നു സത്യവതി പറഞ്ഞു. വേദവ്യാസൻ ഈ പ്രവർത്തി ചെയ്യുന്നതിൽ ഭീഷ്മർക്ക് സന്തോഷമായിരുന്നു. കാരണം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ശ്രേഷ്ഠതയെപ്പറ്റി ഭീഷ്മർക്ക് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു.

സത്യവതി വേദവ്യാസനെ സ്മരിച്ചു. അങ്ങിനെ വേദവ്യാസൻ ഉടൻ തന്നെ അമ്മയുടെ മുൻപിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.

Later, Maharaja Shantanu died.

Chitrangada was anointed king. Chithrangathan was a valiant man who deserved to be king.

Later, in a battle with a Gandharva, Gandharva's illusory Chitrangathan was killed.

At that time, his younger brother Vichitraveeran was not of legal age. However, Vichitraveeran was made king and Bhishma ruled to keep the country from being orphaned.

So time passed ...

Vichitraveeran was of marriageable age. It was at that time that they came to know about the gift of the daughters of King Kashi.

Their names were Amba, Ambika and Ambalika.

On Satyavati's instructions, Bhishma went to Kashi for the sake of Vichitraveeran and conquered the virgins on his own.

Thus Bhishma also reached the place where Swayamvaram was held. 

Seeing this, the kings who were there were saying many things and making fun of Bhishma.

On hearing this, Bhishma became angry and took the maidens and put them in his chariot. Then the kings who stood there were challenged to battle.

Seeing this, the enraged kings attacked Bhishma together but withdrew after seeing Bhishma's fighting prowess. They praised Bhishma.

But only one person followed the chariot of Bhishma. 

It was the king of Swalya (Salva). 

In fact, Amba, the eldest daughter of King Kashi, and King Shwalya had a falling out. Amba had hoped that he would win on his own.

Bhishma did not know this truth. Bhishma going with virgins 

Swalyan challenged.

Swalyarajan fought well at first but could not hold his own against Bhishma. 

Thus he returned to Hastinapur with the virgins.

But then Amba talks about the love affair between him and King Shvalya.

Then Bhishma arranged for Amba to be sent to King Shvalya and Amba was overjoyed.

But King Shvalya, defeated by Bhishma, refused to accept Amba.

Amba returned this information and told Bhishma. 

Bhishma was confused. He tried to marry Amba with Vichitraveeran himself but Vichitraveeran refused as he was a virgin with another man in mind. 

Vichitraveeran married Ambika and Ambalika. 

Then Amba begged Bhishma to marry him and save him from this situation. But Bhishma, a celibate, did not agree. 

Bhishma dropped Amba and told him to go back to King Shvalya.

Seeing this, an angry Amba's mind was filled with thoughts of revenge. She told Bhishma that no matter how many births she had, Bhishma's death would be her way. 

Time has passed again ...

After many years, Vichitravirya had no children. If he was a weirdo, he would get sick and die.

Everyone was sad when they saw this. Bhishma felt that the country and the race were orphaned. Bhishma and Satyavati discussed the solution. 

Satyavati told Bhishma that you should give birth to princesses yourself so that the race does not go to waste. 

But Bhishma was not ready for that.

Satyavati was devastated by the thought that all this had happened because of her.

In the end, Bhishma himself came up with a plan.

It was to reproduce by order of the sages. In the past, when all the Kshatriyas were killed by Parasurama, the children were born by the great sages who were used to sustain the race. Bhishma also introduced that method.

Realizing that there was no other way, Satyavati agreed.

It was then that Satyavati remembered her son Krishnadvaipayana / Vedavyasa. Though ashamed, Satyavati told Bhishma what had happened in the past.

Satyavati said that she could bring Veda Vyasa for this. Bhishma was happy that Veda Vyasa was doing this. Because Bhishma knew about his greatness.

Satyavati remembered Vedavyasa. Thus Vedavyasa immediately appeared before his mother.
